Marriage License Requirements in Kittitas County
Both applicants must appear together at the Auditor's office to apply for a marriage license. Both must have valid photo identification. Washington State does not require blood tests or birth certificates to apply for a marriage license. Both applicants must be 18 or older.
If either applicant was previously married, they must bring documentation showing that prior marriage has been dissolved. Dissolution decrees from Washington or another state are both acceptable, but the dissolution must have been valid under the laws of the state where it occurred.
The marriage license fee in Kittitas County is $64. Under RCW 26.04.180, there is a mandatory three-day waiting period from the date the license is issued before the couple can be married. This waiting period applies statewide and cannot be waived. Once the waiting period ends, the license is valid for 60 days. It may only be used for a wedding held in Washington State.
After the ceremony, the officiant must return the completed marriage return certificate to the Auditor within 30 days. That return creates the official county record of the marriage. Without it, the marriage may not appear in the Auditor's records or in the state's vital records system.
Note: The Kittitas County Courthouse has a lunch closure from noon to 1 PM on weekdays. Plan your application visit outside of that hour to avoid delays.
Certified Copies of Marriage Records
Certified copies of Kittitas County marriage certificates cost $15 each. You can request them in person at the Auditor's office at 205 W 5th Avenue in Ellensburg, or by mail. For mail requests, include the names of both parties, the year of the marriage, your return mailing address, and a check or money order payable to the Kittitas County Auditor.
Certified copies are used to change your name with the Social Security Administration, Department of Licensing, and other agencies. Courts, banks, and insurers often require a certified copy rather than a plain photocopy. The Auditor can issue multiple copies at the time of your request.
For marriages on or after January 1, 1968, the Washington State Department of Health can also issue certified copies at $25 each. Orders through the DOH vital records portal take 3 to 7 business days for online submissions and around 6 to 8 weeks for mail requests. You will need the full names of both spouses and the county where the license was filed.
