King County Recorder: Marriage Licenses

The King County Recorder's Office issues all marriage licenses for SeaTac. Both applicants must appear in person together. You cannot send a representative or complete the process by mail unless one party is in the military or otherwise unable to appear, in which case that person's portion can be notarized.

The license fee is $69. After you apply, state law requires a three-day waiting period before you can hold your ceremony. Your license is valid for 60 days from the date of issue. If you do not marry within that window, the license expires and you must apply again.

Both applicants must bring valid government-issued photo identification. No blood tests are required under current Washington law. Two witnesses are required at the ceremony itself, not at the license application stage.

What You Need to Apply

Preparation helps the appointment go smoothly. Each applicant needs a current, government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. If either party was previously married, you do not need to provide divorce documentation to apply, but staff may ask for the approximate date the prior marriage ended.

Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Washington allows persons 17 and under to marry only with parental consent and court approval, which involves additional steps. For most SeaTac couples, the standard adult process applies. There is no residency requirement. You do not need to live in King County or Washington State to get a license here. You just need to plan your ceremony somewhere the license is valid.

Payment for the $69 fee is accepted by cash or check at the Recorder's Office. Confirm accepted payment methods before your visit, as they can change. The office is located in downtown Seattle, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive north of SeaTac depending on traffic.

After the Ceremony: Returning the Certificate

Your officiant is responsible for returning the signed marriage certificate to the King County Recorder's Office within 30 days of the ceremony. This is a legal requirement. If the officiant fails to return it on time, there can be administrative issues that complicate your ability to get a certified copy later.

Once the certificate is recorded, you can order certified copies. The standard copy fee is $3. These certified copies function as legal proof of marriage and are accepted for name changes, insurance updates, joint financial accounts, and other official purposes. Order several copies at once. You will likely need more than one.

Washington's Marriage Equality Act took effect December 6, 2012. All marriage licenses and certificates issued since then use Person A and Person B rather than bride and groom. Older records may use different terminology. This is worth knowing if you are researching family history or comparing older and newer documents.

The King County Digital Archives holds over 1.6 million marriage-related records covering 1855 through 2017. This collection includes marriage applications, certificates, and returns. Access is free. No account is required to search the database.

The King County Recorder's Office provides access to the digital archives for historical marriage records spanning from 1855 through 2017, covering well over a million individual records.

The digital archive is searchable by name and date range, making it useful for genealogy research or confirming whether a record exists before requesting a physical copy.

For records going back further or for records from small counties around the state, the Washington State Digital Archives at digitalarchives.wa.gov covers collections from dozens of counties. King County's collection there is one of the largest in the state.

State Vital Records: Washington DOH

The Washington State Department of Health maintains marriage records from 1968 to the present. If you need a certified copy and do not want to visit the King County Recorder's Office in person, you can order through the DOH using VitalChek. The fee is $25 per record.

Processing times vary by method. Online orders through VitalChek typically take 3 to 7 business days. Mail-in requests take significantly longer, often 6 to 8 weeks. If you need the record urgently, online ordering or an in-person visit to the Recorder's Office is a better choice.

The Washington State Department of Health vital records ordering page provides full instructions for ordering marriage and divorce records statewide, as shown below. The DOH only has records from 1968 onward. For marriages that took place before that year, you need to contact the King County Recorder's Office directly or search the King County Digital Archives collection.

SeaTac City Clerk: Local Records

The SeaTac City Clerk's office handles city government records, not marriage licenses. The clerk maintains ordinances, resolutions, council meeting agendas, and other municipal documents. Marriage licensing is entirely a county function in Washington State.

If you need city records such as business licenses, council minutes, or administrative documents, the City Clerk can help. Resolution 23-008 designated the Deputy City Clerk as the city's Public Records Officer. Records are maintained in Laserfiche and can be requested by contacting the Legal Department at recordsmanagement@seatacwa.gov or by calling 206.973.4663. The clerk's office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

For any records related to marriage, though, all roads lead to King County. The city does not have its own marriage records system or archive. Even documents recorded with the county that involve SeaTac addresses are held by King County, not by the city.

Who Can Perform a Ceremony in Washington

Washington law under RCW 26.04.050 sets out who may officiate a marriage. Authorized officiants include judges, retired judges, court commissioners, and ordained ministers or religious officials. The state does not require officiants to register with any central agency, but they must meet the legal definition of an authorized person.

Two witnesses must be present at the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate. Their signatures are part of the legal record. After the ceremony, the officiant collects the signed certificate and must return it to the county auditor or recorder within 30 days. Failure to do so is a misdemeanor in Washington and can result in a fine. The couple is not at fault if the officiant fails to return the certificate, but the situation can still cause problems for record retrieval.

All marriage license applications are public records under RCW 26.04.170. This means your application may be published in a local newspaper or accessed by members of the public. If you have concerns about privacy, ask the Recorder's Office whether any opt-out procedures exist for your situation.
