You can find details about the three-day waiting period, the 60-day validity window, and what to do if one party cannot appear in person.
Applying for a Marriage License
Washington State requires a three-day waiting period between the date your license is issued and the date of your ceremony. This rule is set by RCW 26.04.180. It applies to all couples and cannot be waived. Plan your schedule so you apply at least three days before you need to get married.
Both parties must appear in person at the Auditor's office in Everett. Each person needs a valid photo ID. The license costs $72 and is good for 60 days. If you miss the 60-day window, the license expires and you have to apply again and pay again. There is no renewal process for an expired license.
After your ceremony, the officiant must return the signed Certificate of Marriage to the Snohomish County Auditor within 30 days. That returned certificate is what creates the official county record. Under RCW 26.04.050, authorized officiants include judges, licensed ministers, ordained clergy, and other recognized officials. Washington's Marriage Equality Act, which took effect December 6, 2012, applies Person A and Person B terminology on all license applications regardless of the couple's genders.
All marriage license applications are public records under RCW 26.04.170. Anyone can request to view an application.

For mail requests, include both parties' full names, the year of marriage, your return address, and a check or money order made out to Snohomish County Auditor. If ordering by phone, a credit card is required and a convenience fee may apply through VitalChek. In-person requests are typically processed the same day.
The Washington State Department of Health also has certified marriage records for the whole state from 1968 to the present. A certified copy from DOH costs $25 and can be ordered through VitalChek online or by mail. Processing times are 3 to 7 business days for online orders and 6 to 8 weeks for mail. DOH is useful if you are not sure which county the marriage was recorded in, since their records are statewide.

Other Ways to Access Records
If you need to verify whether someone is currently married in Washington, you can request a single-status search from the county auditor or from DOH. This type of search checks whether there are any recorded marriages on file and may be used for legal or immigration purposes. Contact the Snohomish County Auditor at (425) 388-3693 to ask about single-status search availability and fees for the county.
