Find Mercer Island Marriage Records
Mercer Island marriage records are issued and held by King County, not the city. Residents who need to apply for a marriage license, order a certified copy of a marriage certificate, or search historical records must work with the King County Recorder's Office in Seattle. The Mercer Island City Clerk and Municipal Court do not issue marriage licenses and do not hold marriage certificates. This guide covers where to apply, the three-day waiting period, how to order copies, and how to search a free archive with over 1.6 million King County marriage records going back to 1855.

King County Recorder: Marriage Licenses for Mercer Island
All Mercer Island residents get their marriage licenses from the King County Recorder's Office at 201 S Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104. Phone is (206) 296-1655. Both people who plan to marry must appear in person. Each person needs a valid government-issued photo ID. The fee is $69. Washington does not require a blood test. The Recorder maintains marriage records for the full county going back to 1853.
After you apply, the three-day waiting period begins. State law under RCW 26.04.180 requires the wait. It applies to everyone and cannot be waived. Apply on a Wednesday and the earliest ceremony date is Saturday. Plan the application date with that window in mind if your ceremony date is fixed.
Your license is valid for 60 days from the date of issue. It is good only within Washington State. The license cannot be extended or renewed. If it expires before the ceremony, you apply again from the beginning.

The Mercer Island City Clerk is at 9611 SE 36th St, Mercer Island, WA 98040, phone (206) 275-7793. The city's website is at mercergov.org. The city clerk holds official city records including council minutes, ordinances, and resolutions. Marriage licenses and certificates are not among those records. If you contact the city about a marriage record, staff will direct you to King County.
The Mercer Island Municipal Court also does not issue marriage licenses and refers all such inquiries to King County.

The page covers applications, certified copy orders, and the Single Status Search option for confirming marital history in the county.
The Three-Day Wait and Ceremony Rules
The three-day waiting period counts calendar days. It starts the day you apply. There are no exceptions. Two witnesses are required at the ceremony. Both must watch the vows and sign the Certificate of Marriage. The officiant must return the completed certificate to King County within 30 days. Without that return, the official record is incomplete and getting a certified copy is difficult until it is filed.
Authorized officiants under RCW 26.04.050 include judges, court commissioners, and ordained or licensed clergy. Washington accepts online-ordained officiants in many circumstances. Check the statute directly or call the auditor's office if you are unsure whether a particular ordination qualifies. Better to confirm beforehand than have a question about the record later.
Under RCW 26.04.170, all Washington marriage license applications are public records. The index is accessible to any person. Certified copies are available to any requester who pays the fee. No family relationship to the parties is required.
Ordering Certified Copies of Marriage Certificates
Certified copies from the King County Recorder cost $3 each. Non-certified copies are $1. A Single Status Search costs $8 for a one-to-five-year search range. Each additional five-year span adds another $8 to the fee. Single Status Searches are used when someone needs to confirm whether a specific person was married in King County during a certain period.
You can order copies in person at 201 S Jackson St, Seattle, or by mail. For a mail request, include the full legal names of both parties, the approximate marriage year, and payment for the fee. Include a return address. The Recorder also has an online portal for some copy requests through the King County website.
For marriages from 1968 to present anywhere in Washington State, the Department of Health holds statewide records. The fee is $25 per certified copy through VitalChek. VitalChek processes in 3 to 7 business days. Direct mail orders to DOH take 6 to 8 weeks. Use VitalChek if you need the record in a reasonable time frame.

Washington's Marriage Equality Act took effect December 6, 2012. Certificates from before that date list groom and bride. Certificates issued on or after that date use Person A and Person B. For genealogical research, the King County collection in the Digital Archives is one of the most complete county-level marriage collections in Washington. It includes certificates, licenses, and applications across more than 160 years of records.
