The City of Issaquah maintains its own public records through the City Clerk at City Hall, 130 E Sunset Way, Issaquah WA 98027. That office handles municipal records like permits and city council minutes. They do not issue marriage licenses or hold marriage certificates. All marriage matters go through King County.

Getting a Marriage License in Issaquah

If you plan to get married in Washington State and you live in Issaquah, you need a King County marriage license. Both parties must appear in person at the Recorder's Office. You cannot complete this step online or by mail. Bring a valid ID such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID card.

Under RCW 26.04.180, Washington requires a three-day waiting period after the license is issued before the ceremony can take place. The license is valid for 60 days from the date it becomes active. If your ceremony does not happen within that window, the license expires and you would need to apply again.

The fee for a King County marriage license is approximately $69. Call ahead to confirm the current amount before you visit, as fees can change. Payment is accepted in several forms at the office. There is no blood test requirement in Washington.

After the ceremony, the officiant returns the completed license to the Recorder's Office. That office then processes it and files the official marriage record. The King County Recorder has been maintaining these records since the county was established, and the archive stretches from 1853 to the present day.

Note: Both applicants must appear in person to apply. You cannot send one person alone or submit the application by mail or online.

Certified Copies of Issaquah Marriage Records

There are two places to get certified copies of a marriage record for an Issaquah marriage. The right place depends on when the marriage happened.

For marriages since 1968, the Washington State Department of Health keeps certified copies on file. You can order through the DOH website or use VitalChek for faster processing. The base fee is $25 per certified copy. Anyone can request without needing to prove a family connection. Mail orders through DOH typically take 6 to 8 weeks. VitalChek orders come in 3 to 7 business days. Visit doh.wa.gov for current ordering options.

For marriages before 1968, or if you want the county record directly, contact the King County Recorder's Office at 201 S Jackson Street. Certified copies cost $3 per page. Staff can pull the record the same day if you visit in person. You can also mail a written request with the required fee and the names and approximate date of the marriage.

Historical Issaquah Marriage Records

The Washington State Digital Archives holds a large collection of King County marriage records from 1855 to 2017. The database contains over 1.6 million records and includes Issaquah-area marriages from the early settlement period through recent decades. You can search the collection at no cost at digitalarchives.wa.gov. The site supports name searches and Soundex phonetic matching, which helps when spelling is uncertain.

King County also maintains a physical archive of older records. The archive holds birth, death, marriage, and divorce records in a variety of formats including paper documents and other materials. For marriages in the Issaquah area from the late 1800s through the early 1900s, the Digital Archives is usually the best starting point. If a record is not there, contact the King County Recorder's Office for further help.

Several tools are available to search Issaquah and King County marriage records online. The Washington State Digital Archives at digitalarchives.wa.gov is free and covers records from 1855 through 2017. The King County Recorder's Office also has an online document search for recorded instruments, which can include marriage-related filings. Access that through the King County website at kingcounty.gov.

The Washington State Department of Health online portal handles orders for certified copies from 1968 onward. That is a paid service rather than a free search tool, but it is the fastest way to get an official copy if you need one for legal use. The Issaquah City Clerk's public records portal at issaquahwa.gov/prr handles city-level records only and does not include marriage documents.

For genealogy research, the Washington State Library has indexed King County marriage license registers from 1889 to 1895 and 1916 to 1917, plus an index to King County marriage records from 1853 to 1884. These are useful when the Digital Archives does not have the specific record you need.
