Washington authorizes a wide range of officiants under RCW 26.04.050. Judges, justices of the peace, ordained ministers, and religious officials may all legally perform marriages in the state. Online ordinations are generally recognized in Washington, but it is worth confirming with Clark County before your ceremony if you have any doubts.

After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed Certificate of Marriage to Clark County within 30 days. That filed certificate is the legal proof of marriage. Without it, the record is incomplete in the county files.

Washington's Marriage Equality Act took effect December 6, 2012. Certificates before that date list groom and bride. After that date they use Person A and Person B. All applications are public record under RCW 26.04.170.
